Abstract
It has been approximately 30 years since the introduction of corticosteroid drugs for the treatment of bronchial asthma. The potency of these drugs is now widely recognized although recognized are associated undesirable side effects and circumstances that seemingly perpetuate a need for these drugs. And many authors recommended it as a keystone for the management of intractable bronchial asthma.
There were 258 cases of bronchial asthmas who had been admitted to Yonsei University Medical Center during the period of January, 1969 to December, 1976. They were analyzed on the basis of. age and sex incidence, requirement of corticosteroid drugs and the effects in the treatment of the disease.
In this series, the morbidity of these patient was approximately the same in both sexes and the age range was from, eight to seventy-two years, being most common in sixth decades. Among them total 101 patients required corticosteroid drugs in addition to bronchodilators for the relief from the acute attack. In the majority of those cases, either prednisolone or hydrocortisone was administered and the average durations required for the remission were nearly the same, even with, bronchodilator alone.
But in the aspect of the fact that hydrocortisones were given only to the patients who were critically ill on the initial examination or did not respond to any other methods of treatment, it would strongly indicate the value of hydrocortisone drugs in the treatment of bronchial asthma, as major therapeutic agent as well a adjuvant.
